20 Essex Street Offers Tenancy To Two Pupils

This is an archived article, and some links may not work. Contact us if you have any questions.

20 Essex Street is delighted to announce that two pupils have been offered tenancy, effective from 14 September.

Belinda McRae has a particular specialisation in international arbitration (both commercial and investment) and public international law, having worked for several years as an associate in the international arbitration and public international law groups of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Paris, for Professor James Crawford at the University of Cambridge and at international criminal tribunals in Tanzania and Cambodia.

She is presently instructed in the counsel team for a group of Chinese investors in an UNCITRAL arbitration against Mongolia, which is administered by the PCA and as junior counsel in a large Commercial Court case concerning an alleged breach of mandate, as well as on a case in international trade.

As a member of Chambers, Belinda intends to build a broad practice encompassing all areas of Chambers' work, including arbitration, banking and finance, commercial law, private and public international law, public and human rights law, and international trade.

She is a graduate of the University of Queensland, Australia and the University of Cambridge.

Alexander Thompson joins 20 Essex Street to develop a broad commercial practice. He is particularly interested in insurance/reinsurance, company and insolvency, civil fraud and asset tracing, energy and natural resources, commodities and shipping (including ship sale, construction and finance).

Alexander graduated with a First in law from the University of Cambridge and went on to obtain a Distinction on the BCL from the University of Oxford. Before pupillage, Alexander was Senior Retained Lecturer in Administrative Law at Pembroke College, Oxford.

Duncan Matthews QC, 20 Essex Street’s co-head of Chambers said: “Existing members of Chambers are delighted that Belinda and Alex have accepted the offer to become members. They are excellent additions to Chambers and I’m certain they will both be extraordinarily successful”.

Christopher Hancock QC, 20 Essex Street’s other co-head of Chambers said: “20 Essex Street is delighted to welcome such high calibre tenants to Chambers, and looks forward to Belinda and Alex having long and successful careers at The Bar – they are both exemplars of the high standards we set for new members.”
