Subject: Shipping (Voyage Charter)
Summary: Where the charterer of a very large crude carrier (VLCC) had nominated two other VLCCs to receive cargoes of oil by way of ship-to-ship transfers, the judge held that the shipowner had unreasonably withheld its approval of the nominated vessels. The case raised interesting issues as to the nature and scope of the shipowner’s right of approval and as to the scope and effect of the current (2005) Edition of the ICS/OCIMF Ship to Ship Transfer Guide (Petroleum).
