Dr Rishab Gupta is a specialist in international arbitration, commercial litigation and public international law. He is regularly instructed to appear before courts in India and internationally, including before English courts and arbitration tribunals.
Rishab has represented clients in arbitrations conducted under most major arbitration rules (SIAC, ICC, UNCITRAL, HKIAC, SCC, LCIA, AAA and MCIA). His recent instructions include acting for several private equity firms in Singapore seated SIAC arbitrations arising under share purchase agreements; representing Indian companies in India seated construction arbitrations; and appearing before a London seated LCIA tribunal in a gas price review arbitration.
Rishab also has considerable expertise in investment treaty arbitrations. He has represented investors and States in more than ten investor-State disputes conducted under ICSID and UNCITRAL rules. His notable recent instructions include Korea Western Power Company Limited v India (PCA Case No. 2020-06) and Dalal v United Arab Emirates (ICSID Case No. ARB/19/10).
His recent instructions before Indian and English courts include claims arising out of arbitration proceedings such as challenges to and enforcement of arbitral awards (for instance, Neilan International Co. Ltd. v Powerica Ltd., Comm Arb Pet No. 416 of 2019, Bombay HC) as well as general commercial disputes (for instance, Maneks & Ors v 360 One Wam Ltd [2023] EWHC 710 (Comm)).
Rishab also regularly sits as arbitrator. His recent appointments include sitting as a sole arbitrator in an UNCITRAL arbitration between two companies in the Middle East and as a party appointed arbitrator in a SIAC arbitration between two South Asian companies.
Before joining Twenty Essex, Rishab was a partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas where he led the firm’s arbitration practice in Mumbai. Prior to that, Rishab spent several years at Allen & Overy in London and Debevoise & Plimpton in New York. He is qualified to practice in the UK, India and New York.
