Revealed: The Lawyer’s top 20 cases of 2025

It is great to see members of Twenty Essex featured in The Lawyer’s ‘Top 20 cases’ for 2025.

  • The £1.2 billion case of Public Institution For Social Security v Al Rajaan and others will occupy the Commercial Court for 12 months from March, centring on allegations of corruption against the late Fahad Al Rajaan, former director general of PIFSS, the public authority that runs the Kuwaiti social security system and pension scheme. “With factual allegations dating back over 20 years, as well as issues of Swiss and Kuwaiti law in relation to bribery, limitation and dishonest assistance to be discussed, Mr Justice Jacobs has his work cut out for him with this gargantuan fraud claim.” Philip Edey KC is acting for the 41st defendant, The Pensée Foundation.
  • Courtney Grafton is part of the counsel team for the applicant, human rights group Al-Haq, in R (on the application of Al-Haq) v Secretary of State for Business and Trade, centred on decisions by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office regarding supplies of fighter jets to Israel. Professor Philippa Webb is a part of the team acting for the intervener, Oxfam.
  • As part of a global constellation of litigation, alongside cases in Germany, US, Brazil, India and the EU Unified Patent Court, Alcatel Lucent v Amazon will test the application of FRAND principles in the streaming video sector, with the Nokia subsidiary alleging that Amazon has infringed three of its patents via its Prime Video service and associated devices. Josephine Davies KC and Charles Connor are acting for the claimant.
