State of Play 2026: The role of international lawyers acting for – and against – governments

18:00, Wednesday 21 January | In-person only

State of Play – our long-running series of high-profile public international law seminars – returns in January, providing expert insights on the trends that are shaping and influencing the practice of international law.

States are appearing before international courts and tribunals, regional fora, and domestic courts at unprecedented levels. Representing them presents unique challenges, but also significant opportunities.

Drawing on experience as both external counsel and in-house government lawyers, our speakers will discuss recent work in contentious proceedings, advisory matters, and domestic litigation.

Following introductory remarks from Sir Daniel Bethlehem KC, our panel will explore the latest developments shaping international law and share perspectives across government, private practice and advisory roles, with a Q&A with the audience to conclude.

Attendees are invited to stay for a networking reception to continue discussions with the panel and peers, and members from across Twenty Essex.
