Professor Hi-Taek Shin and Sarah Grimmer appointed to the LCIA Court

Congratulations to arbitrator members Professor Hi-Taek Shin and Sarah Grimmer who have been appointed to the LCIA Court.

The LCIA Court is made up of 35 members and is the final authority for the proper application of the LCIA rules. Its principal functions are appointing tribunals, determining challenges to arbitrators, and controlling costs.

Professor Hi-Taek Shin is a full-time arbitrator based in Seoul, South Korea. He accepts appointments as arbitrator in international commercial and investment disputes.

He has unique experience combining a successful career as counsel, academic and arbitrator, as well as in the public service. He has been appointed as a sole, presiding and co-arbitrator in international commercial arbitrations under the rules of major international arbitral institutions. He is on the panel of arbitrators of HKIAC, AAA/ICDR, ICSID, JCAA, KCAB, SCIA, SIAC and THAC. He is also listed on the general list of Neutrals of the WIPO. He is a member of International Commercial Expert Committee, Supreme People’s Court of China. He is also listed as a mediator of SIMC.

Hi-Taek commented on his appointment, stating:

“I am deeply honored to join the LCIA Court and to contribute to its mission of promoting the fair and efficient resolution of international disputes, while helping to shape the future of international arbitration.”

Sarah is based in Singapore and has over 20 years of experience in international commercial, investor-State, and public international law dispute resolution proceedings. She serves as arbitrator in international commercial and investor-State arbitrations. She has in-depth knowledge of the procedural regimes of all major arbitral institutions. She has sat as arbitrator in disputes arising out of the following industries: energy, retail, pharmaceutical, international finance, infrastructure, sports, aviation, hotel, cryptocurrency.

From 2016 to 2022, Sarah served in the highly public role of Secretary-General of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) during which time it was ranked the third most preferred institution in the world. Prior to that, she spent a decade at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague where she administered complex inter-State, investor-State, and contractual disputes involving States, State entities, and intergovernmental organisations.

Sarah responded to the news of her appointment:

“It is my great pleasure and privilege to be appointed to the LCIA Court and have the opportunity to contribute to its important work.”
